You are not alone. Your experiences are real. Your health matters. This is your guide to transforming from a patient to a CEO—the leader of your own health enterprise. Together, we'll navigate a system that wasn't built for us and create the wellness you deserve.

The Reality We Face: If It Can Happen to Them, It Can Happen to Anyone

These stories prove that the healthcare crisis facing Black women transcends wealth, education, and even peak physical fitness. The system fails us all.

Four Gold Medalists, Three Healthcare Battles

The 2016 U.S. Olympic Women's 4x100 Relay Team

Picture this moment: Four elite Black athletes—Tianna Madison, Allyson Felix, English Gardner, and Tori Bowie—standing on the Olympic podium in Rio, gold medals around their necks. They were the pinnacle of human achievement, the fastest women in the world.

But even Olympic gold couldn't protect them from a healthcare system that dismisses Black women:

  • Tianna Madison faced life-threatening pregnancy complications
  • Allyson Felix underwent an emergency C-section at 32 weeks due to severe preeclampsia
  • Tori Bowie tragically died in 2023 from childbirth complications

These women had everything society tells us should guarantee quality care: fame, resources, and bodies in peak physical condition. Yet they still had to fight to be heard, to be believed, to survive.

Even Champions Must Fight to Be Heard

Serena Williams' Near-Death Experience

Serena Williams—23-time Grand Slam champion, global icon, and one of the most recognizable athletes in history—nearly died after giving birth to her daughter Olympia. Despite her history of blood clots and her own deep understanding of her body, she had to insist multiple times before medical staff took her concerns seriously.

"I've had to fight to be heard, even when I knew something was wrong"

When Serena felt short of breath the day after her C-section, she immediately suspected a pulmonary embolism. She had to demand a CT scan. She was right—blood clots had settled in her lungs. If she hadn't advocated so forcefully for herself, she might not be here today.

When Expertise Isn't Enough

Dr. Shalon Irving: The CDC Epidemiologist Who Studied the Very Disparities That Killed Her

Dr. Shalon Irving was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service and a CDC epidemiologist. She dedicated her career to studying and eliminating health disparities. She had dual master's degrees and a PhD. She understood the healthcare system better than almost anyone.

Three weeks after giving birth to her daughter Soleil, Dr. Irving died from complications of high blood pressure—a preventable death. Despite reporting symptoms and seeking care, the system failed to protect her.

"If it can happen to Shalon, it can happen to anyone"

Dr. Irving's death is the ultimate testament to the systemic nature of this crisis. Her expertise, her position, her understanding of the very disparities she studied—none of it was enough to save her life.

"Shalon's death is our call to action. The common thread connecting these stories is not a failure of individual health, but a failure of the healthcare system to listen to, believe, and protect Black women."

The Unapologetic Truth: The Numbers Don't Lie

These statistics aren't just numbers—they represent millions of Black women whose lives, health, and potential are being stolen by systemic inequity.

2.9x
More likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women
60%
Higher rates of high blood pressure
40%
More likely to die from breast cancer
50%
Higher risk of having a stroke
1 in 8
Black women has diabetes (vs 1 in 13 white women)
2.5x
More likely to develop Alzheimer's disease

3 Stolen Years: On average, Black women live to be 78, while white women live to be 81. These are three more years of life, love, and legacy that are being lost.

The Roots of Inequity: Why We Are Here

On April 8, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made a landmark declaration: "Racism is a Serious Threat to the Public's Health"

Individual Racism

Personal prejudices and biases that healthcare providers may consciously or unconsciously hold.

Structural Racism

How institutions and systems create and perpetuate racial inequalities through policies and practices.

Systemic Racism

The broader cultural and social norms and values that entrench racial bias across society.

1910

The Flexner Report

This report standardized medical education but also led to the closure of 5 of the 7 existing Black medical schools, devastating the pipeline of Black physicians for generations.

Until 1968

AMA Exclusion

The American Medical Association excluded Black physicians from membership for over a century, forcing Black doctors to create the National Medical Association.

1932-1972

A Legacy of Mistrust

The Tuskegee Syphilis Study and the story of Henrietta Lacks created deep-seated and justified mistrust of the medical establishment within Black communities.

1964

End of Hospital Segregation

It wasn't until the Civil Rights Act that hospitals receiving federal funds were required to desegregate.

"Equality is giving everyone the same size shoe. Equity is making sure everyone gets a shoe that fits them properly."

Rewriting the Narrative: From Mental Health Stigma to Strength

Understanding Bessie's Truth: When Jesus is Your Counselor

The "Strong Black Woman" Schema

When strength becomes a burden

For generations, we've worn our strength like armor. But this societal archetype, while born of resilience, can lead to detrimental health outcomes:

  • An obligation to project strength at all times
  • The suppression of emotions
  • Prioritizing caregiving over self-care
  • Higher rates of depression, anxiety, and delays in seeking care

True strength includes the courage to be vulnerable, to seek help, and to prioritize your own well-being. It's about finding balance, not bearing an impossible burden.

Imposter Syndrome

The feeling that you don't belong, even when you've earned your place.

Weathering

The cumulative impact of chronic stress from discrimination on our bodies.

Breaking the Silence

Addressing the alarming rise in Black Girl Suicide and depression.

"I finally want to be alive... I don't even want to die anymore. Your mental health is health. Seeking help is not weakness—it's wisdom."
