Picture this moment: Four elite Black athletes—Tianna Madison, Allyson Felix, English Gardner, and Tori Bowie—standing on the Olympic podium in Rio, gold medals around their necks. They were the pinnacle of human achievement, the fastest women in the world.
But even Olympic gold couldn't protect them from a healthcare system that dismisses Black women:
- Tianna Madison faced life-threatening pregnancy complications
- Allyson Felix underwent an emergency C-section at 32 weeks due to severe preeclampsia
- Tori Bowie tragically died in 2023 from childbirth complications
These women had everything society tells us should guarantee quality care: fame, resources, and bodies in peak physical condition. Yet they still had to fight to be heard, to be believed, to survive.
